Cetearyl Alcohol is used mostly for formulation purposes. It’s a very good emulsifier and emulsion stabilizer. It helps the ingredients mix better and it makes the product spread on your skin evenly. It also makes the product thicker. It doesn’t belong to harmful alcohols and it will not dry your skin.

Phenoxyethanol is one of the most popular preservatives. It kills bacteria and makes the product live longer. Manufacturers like this ingredient because it can dissolve in any liquid, even in oils.

Another purpose of this component is the fixation of aromas in perfumery. Phenoxyethanol is also used as a strong antiseptic and a good antibacterial agent. It is widely used in dermatological cosmetics alongside natural antiseptics such as chamomile, sage, and calendula.

Like many other preservatives, Phenoxyethanol is a strong chemical. European Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 allows this component in cosmetics at a maximum concentration of 1%. Clinical studies showed that the component doesn’t irritate the skin and doesn’t make it sensitive. According to the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 it’s not toxic.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a surfactant. It helps cosmetic products to remove all the sebum and dirt from your skin. Water can't dissolve sebum on its own because sebum contains oils. Surfactants help water get into sebum and wash off all the unnecessary stuff from your skin.

The component also helps to form a nice foam. The foam allows to spread the product evenly. which is important for good cleansing.

The component is researched quite well. Studies showed that it doesn't have any negative impact on human health if you apply it to your skin. It can be toxic only if you take SLS inside, but we doubt that somebody likes to drink shampoo or eat soap.

However, the component has its negative side. It can dry out skin or hair too much. You can suffer from this effect if you have dry skin. Plus it can make your hair less protected because natural sebum works like a barrier. Washing it off completely isn't the best idea.
